Spook Country by William Gibson

Goodreads page My rating: 5 out of 5 My review: While I liked other W.G’s books more, this one is not to be missed either. It’s not a traditional sci-fi you would expect from W. Gibson, but it is nevertheless a suspense thriller filled with contemporary technologies and interesting twists. Gibson uses his standard technique of having 3-4 story-lines joining at some point together. However “standard” this technique is for Gibson, the story itself is unique and intriguing. …

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Goodreads page My rating: 5 out of 5 My review: I’d say this is Little Prince for grownups, but it wouldn’t do it justice. The Alchemist made my cry, laugh and experience moments of pure happiness. It will either make you happy because you are following your heart, sad because you are not or excited about your destiny. For me at least, this is the best book I have ever read. …

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Goodreads page My rating: 4 out of 5 My review: Another of Gaiman’s great works. I can’t get enough of his storytelling abilities. Somehow he is able to create vivid images of most unimaginable places in my mind. A great adventure of a boy growing in in a graveyard and being raised by ghosts after his family is murdered in the dark of the night.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Goodreads page My rating: 5 out of 5 My review: I can’t remember last time a book made me cry (several times). This is an emotional bomb full or regrets, past misdeeds, rivalry and most of all redemption. Khaled Hosseini is a master storyteller who managed to somehow describe even the most terrible events in the impassive voice of Amir, who is remembering his childhood living with his father after his mother died giving birth to him. …

The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett

Goodreads page My rating: 3 out of 5 My review: I enjoyed this second Discworld novel marginally more than the first part (Colour of Magic). The humour is there in all its gory, no idiom will stay unscathed and no legend uprooted. Darkness is not the opposite of light, it’s just absence of light. Opposite of light is called (appropriately): Light Fantastic.

Virtual Light by William Gibson

Goodreads page My rating: 4 out of 5 My review: I loved how this book started to create a bridge to the world of Neuromancer in my mind. Yes, still a world very much like our own, but much more anarchistic and full of weird characters. Again typical for Gibson: Three story lines coming together and doing so with a bang! I still liked the Sprawl trilogy more, but just because of more futuristic world, the characters in Virtual Light are just as likeable and interesting. …

White Fang by Jack London

Goodreads page My rating: 4 out of 5 My review: First real “novel” I’ve ever read. That’s how I started to love Jack London’s narrative style. Straight to to point, wild and sometimes plain cruel.

Zero History by William Gibson

Goodreads page My rating: 4 out of 5 My review: A fine ending to a trilogy. For the most part the plot revolves around Hollis returning to do “one last” job for Hubertus Bigend. Joined by Milgrim, an ex-addict with a knack for details and paranoia. Bigend is up to something big this time, ruffling feathers of some ex-military arms dealers. No one in his inner circle can be sure of their safety now. …

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Goodreads page My rating: 4 out of 5 My review: I didn’t know what to expect, since I hadn’t seen the movie before reading the book. That said, I loved the british version that included all chapters (unlike the US version and movie apparently). I found it exceptionally entertaining to watch main character pillage, beat, rape and even kill. Make no mistake, the acts themselves were terrible and vicious, but the apparent innocence of main character is undeniable. …
