A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
My rating: 4 out of 5
My review:
I didn’t know what to expect, since I hadn’t seen the movie before reading the book. That said, I loved the british version that included all chapters (unlike the US version and movie apparently). I found it exceptionally entertaining to watch main character pillage, beat, rape and even kill. Make no mistake, the acts themselves were terrible and vicious, but the apparent innocence of main character is undeniable. He doesn’t really understand why he does what he does. There is no real reason apart from it being fun for him. And then the punishment…Oh the punishment is indeed even worse than crimes he committed. Or is it? Terribly hard question to answer. The book says it perfectly: “Does God want goodness or the choice of goodness? Is a man who chooses to be bad perhaps in some way better than a man who has the good imposed upon him?”
